File Management Basics

Get to know how to perform the basics of file management efficiently with Cosmil.

Navigating your Folders#

Navigating your foldes with Cosmil is simple and intuitive. To navigate into folders, either double click them, or use the arrow keys on your keyboard to select a folder and press Enter to navigate into it. To navigate into the current directory’s parent folder, simply press ⌘▲ (⌘+ArrowUp).

Opening Files#

Tip

Unlike most file explorers, Cosmil lets you use the "Open With" submenu with folders as well as files. You might use this to open a folder in your IDE, for example. A screenshot showcasing the file context menu with the Open With submenu open.

To open a file, you can double click it. Alternatively, you can right click the file to open its context menu, and click `Open`, or view the `Open With` submenu to open the file with a non-default app.

Creating Files and Folders#

You can create new empty files and folders using the ⌘N and ⌘⌥N keyboard shortcuts respectively. Alternatively, you can click New File or New Folder menu items under the File category in the app menu.

Once you use the shortcut or press the menu item, a “temporary” file will be focused in your active pane and you will be able to type your desired file name. After you’ve entered the file name, you can create the file by pressing Enter, otherwise you can cancel the file creation by pressing Escape or clicking anywhere outside the file name input.

Sorting Files#

There are multiple ways to sort files by different criteria:

Keyboard shortcuts
- ⌘⌥1-6, 1 is Name, 2 is Kind and so on...
App Menu/Context Menu
- App Menu: View -> Sort
- Context Menu: Right click anywhere in the content pane that isn’t a file, then hover the Sort submenu to view options
List View Column Headers
- When in list view, click any of the column headers by name to select their sort order

By default Alphabetical and Kind will sort in ascending order, whereas temporal and Size sorts will sort in descending order. To toggle sort order, simply choose the same sort twice (e.g. in list view clicking the Name column header twice will take it from ascending order to descending — same logic goes for keybinds and menus).

Removing Files#

Note

By default, Cosmil prompts you with a confirmation dialog before you permanently delete files. If you would like, you can override the confirmation prompt by modifying your settings—but be careful because after files are permanently deleted they are unrecoverable.

You can delete files and folders using the Move to Trash (⌘⌫), and Delete Permanently (⌘⇧⌫) keyboard shortcuts. Alternatively, you can click the respective menu items in the file context menu or under the File category in the app menu.

Calculating Folder Sizes#

Tip

To make sure you can actually see the folder size once its calculated, ensure you're either in list view with the Size column enabled, or make sure you have the Preview Pane open.

With Cosmil you can calculate the size of any selected folder(s) on-demand using the ⌘⇧S keyboard shortcut. Alternatively, you can click the Calculate Size menu item under the File category in the app menu.
